In this weeks episode:

I went into the archives and pulled a podcast from 2009 that many people have asked for — Oxygen Therapy. For anyone who hasn’t heard it, it’s a good overview of oxygen adjuncts. And for those who of you who have heard it before, it might be a good review. At the very least, it’s a cool way to hear how the podcast was two years ago as opposed to today. I hope you enjoy!

In the news this weeks:

Three articles from buzzle.com about nursing leadership. I thought these would be good since all of us, in one way or another, become leaders……..whether formal or informal.

In this weeks episode:

Welcome! I’m beginning my third year of podcasting! I can’t believe it’s been THAT long since this all began! And to go along with that, the blog has made the top 50 Nursing Blogs on the web!! Wooohooo!!!! It’s an honor to be considered one of the best blogs on the web!

Don’t forget about the nursing cruise I talked about on the last show! It promises to be both fun and educational! Find out more and sign up for the newsletter about the cruise at THIS LINK.

Ever wanted to know more about interpreting an arterial blood gas report? Well, now you can! I’m offering a live class on ABG interpretation the end of this month! Just go to PhoenixCE and sign up for it! AND, you’ll get 3 CEU’s for attending too!

I also have another course coming out by the end of July. This one is on ACS and STEMI care. It’s going to be worth 1+ CEU’s and will cover the basics of ACS and the different presentations in men and women, as well as diagnosis and care of the STEMI patient.

And, check out “Profiles in Success” on iTunes. It’s a once weekly (Saturday) podcast from JB Glossinger, the founder of Morning Coach. The podcast is a 15 minute interview of people who have been successful in their lives (both personal and professional) and this week, he’s interviewing me! It promises to be an interesting interview. Look for it this coming Saturday!

Also this week, I’m a panelist on another podcast. This one is by Jamie Daivs, the Podmedic. The show is “Insights in Nursing”. This week, we discuss research studies and their outcomes, and a few other interesting topics! Take a listen!

In the news today:

An article from Emergency Medicine News about potential new rules from the CMS. This time, I actually think it’s a good idea. They’re looking at benchmarking throughput times for ED patients. This may give hospital administrations a financial incentive to get admitted patients OUT of the ED sooner! Let’s hope!

Also, an article from EMS Responder online magazine about patient assessment. This is where the entire continuum of care truly begins and it needs to be correct. I love this article. Take a look and see what you think!

A “fun” article from JEMS.com that looks back on some history in emergency medicine and the tools we used to use. For those who have been around as long as I have or longer, back from when EMS was truly in its’ infancy, it’s a fun trip through memory lane. And for those who are relatively newer, it might be cool to read about some of the things we used to use.

An article form Medical News Today about the questionable benefits of tight blood pressure control.

In the news this week:

It’s a diabetes heavy news spot this week.
First up, an article from WebMD that diabetes doubles a person’s risk of heart attack and stroke.

A second article from WebMD on a new class of diabetes medicine. This one will help control a person’s sugar AND help control their weight. Very interesting!

Another article on diabetes from WebMD. This one on a new way to administer insulin…..inhaled! This promises to help people stay more compliant with their medicines!

And from the “I can’t believe they did that!” files….a hospital used an off duty police officer to pretend to be a terrorist who stormed the ICU and took the nurses “hostage”. He then told them it was a drill. This could have been a MAJOR problem for lot of reasons. Read the article from the Las Vegas Sun to learn more.

And last for the news, an funny (and sarcastic!) article about the absurdities for JHACO and other regulating agencies. You’ll enjoy reading this one!!

OK, now on with the show!

In the news this week:

It's a diabetes heavy news spot this week.
First up, an article from WebMD that diabetes doubles a person's risk of heart attack and stroke. ( http://diabetes .webmd.com/news/20100624 /diabetes -doubles-risk-of-hert-attack-stroke)

A second article from WebMD on a new class of diabetes medicine. (http://diabetes .webmd.com/news/20100625 /new-type-diabetes -drug -drops-weight-with-blood-sugar) This one will help control a person's sugar AND help control their weight. Very interesting!

Another article on diabetes from WebMD. This one on a new way to administer insulin.....inhaled! (http://diabetes .webmd.com/news/20100624 /inhaled-insulin-may-help-treat -diabetes ) This promises to help people stay more compliant with their medicines!

And from the "I can't believe they did that!" files....a hospital used an off duty police officer to pretend to be a terrorist who stormed the ICU and took the nurses "hostage". He then told them it was a drill. This could have been a MAJOR problem for lot of reasons. Read the article from the Las Vegas Sun to learn more. (http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2010/may/29/hospital-uses-armed-man-unannounced-drill/)

And last for the news, an funny (and sarcastic!) article about the absurdities for JHACO and other regulating agencies. You'll enjoy reading this one!! (http://www.epmonthly.com/whitecoat/2010/06/more-serious-offenses/)

OK, now on with the show!

Emergency Nursing Today has been named one of the top 50 nursing education blogs on the net! This distinction is directly attributable to YOU! Thank you for making this all possible!

The local Fire/Rescue, Flagler County Fire Rescue, has an ALS competition team that has been building one heck of a reputation! Last year, they were named World Champs at the Rallye Rejviz in Jesenik, Czech Republic, and missed repeating as champs by three points this year! Congratulations to both teams who went and competed. I know and work with these guys, and to be considered second best in the WORLD is awesome!! To find out more about the team, visit their home page at www.flaglerteam.com.

Here’s an article from WebMD on the potential dangers of false positives on drug tests. The test can falsely show positive up to 10% of the time!

A Medline Plus article on timely and quick use of antibiotics for COPD patients.

And here’s an article from WebMD on hospital deaths and the national database.

One last thing before I get to the podcast. I wanted to tell you about something that has made a HUGE difference in my life. I have always believed in personal and professional growth and development……..hence this podcast! I began it 2 years ago as a means to keep my mind working and enrich my knowledge and education in emergency medicine/nursing and medicine in general. But I also have used/read/studied many personal growth systems over the years. I believe consistently learning and developing yourself and putting some time and effort into making yourself better is the one single thing you should do……….daily!
Well, I’ve found a really great resource that can help you do this! It’s a special coaching program from my friend JB Glossinger. JB is a really sharp guy and he’s done an amazing job applying the principles of success to his own life. Now he offers a daily coach cast, which is 15 or 20 minutes of power-packed content to start your day in an amazing way. Each morning is a fresh topic, anything from how to develop your intelligence to mind mapping, overcoming doubts to creating action plans, and strengthening your personal discipline to creating abundance.
I believe your entire day is created before you leave the house in the morning. If you create a positive attitude and prosperity consciousness, you attract positive people and circumstances into
your life. If you rush out the door, grab breakfast at 7-11, and rush into work, you attract negative people and circumstances. JB’s “Morning Coach” program will make sure you start each day the right way.
I know if you get on the program it will make a big difference in your success and prosperity. I know it has in my life. I love his work and I’m sure you will too. Check it out and see for yourself.
JB has offered all my subscribers a free 7-day all-access plan. Just go to my site and click on the big blue link in the center column for a 7 day FREE trial of this amazing system!!

OK, now on with the show!
